Man Flees Police in Vehicle He Thought Was Stolen, But Wasn’t

On Tuesday, February 7th, at approximately 8:15 am officers with the Wichita Falls Police Department attempted to stop a white 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche for a traffic violation in the area of North Leighton and McNiel.  The driver of the vehicle refused to stop for police and began to accelerate away from officers.

The vehicle came to a stop in the 3000 block of Cromwell at which time officers performed a felony stop.  The vehicle was occupied by the driver, 22 year old Darrel Hargrove of Wichita Falls, and a 19 year old black male passenger.

Hargrove made several res gestae statements to officers stating that he thought the vehicle was stolen.  A check on the vehicle showed it not to be stolen.  Officers were unable to make contact with the registered owner and the vehicle was impounded.

Hargrove was arrested and transported to the Wichita County jail without incident where he was charged with felony evading.

The passenger was released at the scene.
