On 08-05-14, at approx 3:05am, WFPD Night Shift Patrol Officers stopped a subject on foot in the 4500 Blk of Kemp while investigating a disturbance. The subject was identified as 18 year old Mario Salazar, a known gang member. Salazar was uncooperative with officers. He would not face them and he kept digging in his front waistband. After several commands to show his hands, Salazar threw a metal object into a nearby overgrown drainage ditch. Once officers had Salazar detained, he told them that he had thrown out a pair of brass knuckles, a prohibited weapon. Due to the darkness and the weeds, officers were unable to find the discarded weapon and arrested Salazar for Felony Tampering with Evidence. He was transported to jail without incident.
Once the sun came up, WFPD Day Shift Patrol Officers responded to the location to search the ditch for the discarded weapon. They located a loaded black Springfield semi-automatic handgun. Records check confirmed that the gun had been stolen in a recent vehicle burglary.
This case is still under investigation by the WFPD Criminal Investigation Section.
